Goffs Oak Girl Guides Try Dive (21 April 2016)
(For divers reading this article, please note that it is in the try diver’s own words, hence references to flippers, goggles and oxygen tanks)
As Goffs Oak Senior Section (part of Girlguiding) we went scuba diving at the Laura Trott Leisure Centre on 21st April 2016. We wanted to try something new and thought it was a good idea to do a try dive in the pool to make sure we would all enjoy it in a safe environment. If you’ve never tried it before, we really recommend you do this!
The Lee Valley Dive Club welcomed us, kitted us out with flippers, goggles and our backpacks with the oxygen tanks – the backpacks were surprisingly heavy but once we got into the water they were really light.
There were eight of us altogether and we were all new to scuba diving. The instructors were very accommodating and the other club members helped to make sure we all got into the pool safely. The kit was really comfortable in the pool and after a good explanation of how it all works we started to get the hang of it and breathing became much easier.
“Every time I went under the water I took a deep breath as you would when swimming, but once I got used to the unnatural feeling of breathing under water, it was great fun!”
The instructors taught us how to inflate and deflate our backpacks as well as ourselves (by taking deep breaths and holding it) to show us how easy it was to move with simple actions. We also tried some more challenging moves which we all enjoyed.
“My favourite part of the night was when Danielle and I were doing tricks under the water.”
It was a great experience that left us all wanting to have another go. A big thank you to Mike and the scuba team for all their fantastic help and tuition – it really made getting in the water and trying something new a lot easier!
